The Pillars of Democracy in Ancient Athens

The Greek students studied the roots of democracy in Ancient Athens.They learnt that the term democracy comes from demos, "common people" and kratos which meant "strength". What did democracy mean in those times? How was it all organised? What was the importance of politics for Athenian citizens?
